Class 12 History: Bhartiya Itihas ke Kuch Vishay (Bhag I)

Pehla Chapter: Bricks, Beads and Bones - Harappan Sanskriti

Yeh chapter aapko le chalega us duniya mein jahan Harappan yaani Indus Valley Civilization ki kahani zinda hoti hai—par ruko, pehle sawal yeh hai ki archaeology ke sources asal mein kaam kaise karte hain? Excavation ke tareeke bhi koi aise hi nahi hain, unke apne funde hain, apni uljhanen hain. Sochiye, Mohenjodaro aur Harappa jaisi jagahon se jo cheezein mili hain—bartan, muhrein, imaraton ke aawesh—unhi ke sahare historians aur archaeologists ne itihaas ki taseer banayi, aur woh bhi itne dhyan se, jaise koi purani tasveer ke tukdon ko jodkar poora chehra banata hai, bas ek tukda galt jagah rakha nahi toh poori kahani badal jaati hai. Toh chaliye, dekhte hain ki yeh mitti aur patthar ke tukde humein kya-kya batate hain. Aakhir mein, kuch toh hoga hi inmein.

Bhartiya Itihas ke Kuch Vishay - Harappan Sanskriti Ka Adhyayan

NCERT ki Class 12 wali history book, ‘Bhartiya Itihas ke Kuch Vishay Bhag I’, apna pehla chapter poori tarah Harappan Sanskriti ko de deti hai. Aur shuruat hi aisi hai jo seedha sawal uthati hai—hum itne purane zamane ke baare mein jaante kaise hain, khaas kar jab likhit saboot milte hi nahi. Yeh chapter bas itna hi samjhana chahta hai.

Harappan Civilization: Ek Parichay

Harappan Sanskriti—yaani woh civilization jo lagbhag 2600 BCE se 1900 BCE tak phali-phooli—koi chhoti-moti basti nahi thi, balki ek badi aur faili hui urban tehzeeb thi. Iske bade kendron mein Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Dholavira, aur Kalibangan jaise sheher aate hain. Aur haan, iski khoj toh 1920s mein hui thi, jab puratattvavidon ne khudai kar ke is purani duniya ke raaz ujaale mein laaye.

Itihaas ke Sources: Archaeology ke Aayine Mein

Is chapter mein hum yehi dekhne wale hain ki itihaas likhne ke liye aakhir hum kis tarah ke sources ka sahara lete hain—aur yeh kaam itna aasaan bhi nahi hai, kyunki har source apne saath apni alag keemat aur apni alag pareshaniyan leke aata hai.

  • Khodai, yaani excavations, ka apna hi ek alag maqaam hai is silsile mein. Mohenjodaro jaise thikano se jo kuch milta hai—chaahe woh bricks hon, beads, haddiyan ya phir aam istemal ke tools—yeh sab kuch is kahani ke bure nahi, balki asli gawah hain. In chhoti-chhoti cheezon mein ek poora zamana chupa hota hai, bas unhe dhyaan se padhne ki zaroorat hai.
  • Well-planned cities, drainage systems, citadels, and granaries—these weren’t just random constructions. They’re a dead giveaway of how advanced this civilization’s planning really was. You look at the layout, and it hits you: someone thought this through, meticulously. The streets weren’t an afterthought. Neither were the drains — and the citadels? They scream power and order, standing tall as a statement. Granaries, on the other hand, whisper a quieter truth—about surplus, about foresight, about a society that stored for tomorrow instead of just surviving today. Architecture here wasn’t mere brick and mortar. It was a mirror of their mindset. Every structure, every angle, every carefully placed wall, it all points to one thing: a people who didn’t just build—they planned, they engineered, they dreamed in straight lines and functional forms. And honestly, that’s what makes it so remarkable.
  • Artefacts and crafts—pottery, seals, metal tools, jewellery—these aren’t just old things dug out of the ground. They’re clues. Pick up a broken pot, and you’re holding evidence of their craft, their tech, even who they traded with. A seal tells a story of administration, a metal object hints at their skill, a piece of jewellery whispers about their tastes and connections. It’s all there, if you bother to look. And honestly, that’s what archaeology is about—letting these objects talk, because they don’t lie.
  • Harappan script — still a locked door. We’ve cracked plenty of other ancient codes, but this one refuses to budge. And that’s a real problem—because without being able to read it, we’re basically squinting at a half-dark room. Every seal, every tiny inscription, they’re all sitting right there, waiting to spill their secrets. But the alphabet won’t cooperate. So yeah, it’s a massive hurdle, one that keeps archaeologists awake at night.

Historical Challenges aur Interpretations

Sanskriti ko samajhna koi seedha raasta nahi hai. Yeh toh sawalon ka pura jhol hai. Sabse pehla sawal — kya yeh Sanskriti waqai mein koi alag cheez thi, ya kisi aur ka hi roop tha? Phir woh gir gayi, kyun? Kya wajah thi iske patan ki? Aur unke religious beliefs — woh the kya, kis par yakeen karte the? Har historian ke paas apne alag uttar hain. Koi ek source pakadta hai, toh koi doosri theory ke peeche bhagta hai. Kuch kehte hain yeh, kuch kehte hain woh. Aur is chapter mein hum inhi vivaadon ko kholte hain — har taraf se, har angle se — aur dekhte hain ke in interpretations ka analysis kya kehta hai. Koi simple jawab nahi milta, bas sawaal aur unke gehre pahlu.

Chapter ka Mahatva

Yeh chapter sirf dates aur facts ratwane ke liye nahi hai. Ye to students ko wo nazariya deta hai jisse wo samajh saken ki itihaas banता kaise hai. Aap seekhte hain ki ek chhota sa tukda, ek adhoori tasveer, use kaise jod kar ek kahani banayi jaati hai—wo bhi poori authenticity ke saath. Evidence ka analysis kaise hota hai, ye bhi yahin samajh aata hai. Aur sabse badi baat, ye chapter aapke dimaag mein sawal uthata hai, aapko sochne par majboor karta hai. Critical thinking khud-ba-khud develop hoti hai.

Zara sochiye — yeh chapter sirf ek padhai ka hissa nahi hai, yeh toh Harappan civilization ko samajhne ki seedhi hai. Isme aapko milegi uski khoj ki kahani, uski khaas pehchaan, aur un tareeqon ki jinke through hum us purani duniya ko parh sakte hain. Class 12 ke history course mein iska apna ek alag hi maqaam hai — seedha sa kehdo toh, yeh woh buniyad hai jispar poori samajh khadi hai. Aur agar aap isse gehrai se samajh lein, toh aage ka raasta kaafi asaan ho jaata hai.
